Kindergarten and First Grade have been learning números from one to twenty en español! To practice los números, we read Los Mariachis by Rita Rosa Ruesga and listened to traditional Mariachi music from México. How fitting, then, that there is a Mariachi festival this weekend in Oklahoma City!

Kindergarten through Third Grade learned about the different parts of the body! We sang "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes," the Spanish version, and played games and made crafts with our new vocabulary words. Check out the pictures below! Kindergarten and First Grade made "mini-me" paper muñecas and labeled them with the parts of the body to match our song! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxQOHkjuybw Vocabulary: cabeza (head), hombros (shoulders), rodillas (knees), pies (feet), ojos (eyes), orejas (ears), boca (mouth), nariz (nose) Come check our their work in the front stairwell! Second and Third Grade also learned the "Cabeza, Hombros, Rodillas, Pies" song but added some new moves to match their additional vocabulary words! They practiced the words with fun games, such as running dictation, in which students must remember the word, placement, and spelling for a part of the body it to come back and tell their team's writer!

Our second- and third-grade students worked in groups to design outfits for our very own JRCES Spanish desfile de moda. It was a busy month of September! Students across all grade levels learned the Spanish words for the basic colors and practiced using and comprehending the words, and students in first through third grade learned the names for various animals that they saw at the Oklahoma State Fair. Most excitingly, we started holding the first 15-20 minutes of each class period entirely in Spanish!! Students have learned to pay attention to body language and other cues and to listen for words that they recognize and have been very successful in participating in our all-Spanish portion of class! In October, we will learn the names for various articles of clothing! Kindergarten and First Grade are participating in "Build-an-Oso," becoming designers of clothing for bears. Second and Third Grade will use their clothing vocabulary to design an outfit and put on a fashion show. Look for pictures to come!
Once a week, students have time to independently learn more about the Spanish language and world cultures according to their interests in our exploration centers. Leer - Students read literature in Spanish, learning new words and re-discovering words we have learned in class. Viajar - Students "travel" to other countries of the world through informational texts! They use notecards to take notes about different places they would like to travel and begin to plan their trips. Arte - Students create a picture with as many of the Spanish words that we have learned as they can! They label the various pieces of their pictures with the names in Spanish and can take their artwork home to practice the Spanish words. Mapas - Students identify different cultural and geographic aspects of world maps including names of continents, oceans and countries, and the animals which live there.
